Puzzle Games That Respect Your Time

Puzzle Games That Respect Your Time

May 29, 2026 · Markus Feldmann

The worst thing a puzzle game can do is make you wait. Energy bars and forced timers turn a relaxing genre into a chore, and offline players get the worst of it because half the interruptions are connection checks.

The good ones let you play as long as you want. The Hollow Lantern is technically an adventure, but its puzzles are the reason I finished it in two sittings — logical, fair, and never padded.

My rule of thumb: a puzzle should make you feel clever, not tricked. If the solution only works because of some hidden rule, that's bad design, not difficulty.

Test any puzzle game in airplane mode for ten minutes. If it still runs smoothly, you've found a keeper for your next long trip.
