Ember of Thanor
★★★★★ 4.7
Ember of Thanor is the kind of RPG that feels like it belongs on a handheld console. You lead a small party across a dying kingdom, and the turn-based battles reward planning over reflexes. Each character has a clear role, and swapping skills before a tough fight is half the fun.
The writing surprised me. Side characters have real arcs, and choices in dialogue nudge the story in small but noticeable ways. Everything is stored locally, so you can grind a dungeon on a long flight with zero worries.
My only gripe is the early pacing — the first hour is a lot of tutorial. Push past it and there's a rich, generous game underneath.
